I WANT TO ESTABLISH A FEW NEW FRIENDSHIPS

Unfortunately I have a past I am ashamed of but I am through with crime.  I entered the Kentucky system more than twenty years ago.  Today I realize it was the best thing that could ever happen to me, at that stage of my life, because I was an alcoholic, a drug addict and an immature 30 year old making too many bad choices.

Some say I am a model prisoner due to my good institution records and for the  following reasons:

I have struggled to educate myself with the encouragement and help of my creative writing/poetry mentors and prison personnel.  I have successfully completed every self-help program made available to me and earned a GED.  My poetry has earned a few awards from PENs Writing Awards for Prisoners and one of my goals is to counsel teenagers who have gotten themselves in trouble some day.

I love animals and children. I enjoy traveling to places where I have never been, all kinds of music, cooking out, horseback riding, amusement parks, zoos and movies.

My greatest hope is to correspond with an intelligent woman who can understand how much someone can change while serving the amount of time I have behind bars.

I have grown into a well-rounded gentleman and you would be proud to have me as a friend.  I will answer all responses and am willing to relocate to anywhere for someone special.

I want to share a poem I have written to provide a sample of my poetry to you.

OUTSIDE THE KENTUCKY STATE PENITENTIARY

Some people say
the body of water
we see from the windows
is Barkley Lake
Some people say
it's the Cumberland River.

If it were a lake
it would be water
imprisoned behind a dam,
stopped, stilled, confined in a circle,
its shore like a cage.
If it were a river,
it would be moving
on to the sea.

Sometimes
I wonder which we are,
lake or river, forever impounded
or forever escaping
into the next days future
within its restraining banks
